7.7M earthquake on March 28, 2025 and multiple aftershocks damaged homes of more than 50000 families – collapsed or rendered unusable. Families were staying in highly inadequate makeshift shelters made with plastic sheets or tarpaulins. People in Centre collaborated with UNDP to quickly prepare design options and technical guidelines for wooden-bamboo houses after studying the vernacular housing typologies, damage patterns, and consultation with the affected families. We supported UNDP to establish an owner driven framework for supporting the families in building these houses using whatever salvage material they had and incorporating hazard resilient features.
