The film examines urban–rural water inequities, unrecognised wastewater users, policy gaps, and the conveyance of wastewater from cities to villages. It foregrounds the informal yet essential use of wastewater by farmers for irrigation, a practice that persists despite limited institutional support and contributes largely to food security and livelihoods.
These practices are explored through stories of “claimed” used water from places such as Ahmedabad, Ruva, Rajkot, Patan, and Unjha in Gujarat, alongside narratives of numerous wastewater users across India. The film weaves together these lived experiences with perspectives from experts and municipal authorities to unpack challenges, conflicts, and possible pathways forward. At its core, the film seeks to re-centre neglected rural–urban relationships in wastewater management and farming, both of which remain marginal in policies and practice.
